On Friday, Hubs and I finally got a chance to try Falafel’s Drive-In in San Jose. It was actually introduced to us by one of my good friends who was visiting from LA last month. In her words, “you have got to try this place…its so good…it was actually featured on the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show!” Falafel’s Drive-In even has a poster of Guy Fieri in the window, heh heh. For those of you who may not know, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is a show on the Food Network hosted by Guy Fieri, where he basically drives around looking for the aforementioned eateries.
If you go, apparently the hot items to get are the falafel sandwiches and banana milkshakes, according to Yelp. Hubs hates bananas with a passion, but for some reason, he really likes these banana milkshakes. The banana flavor isn’t artificial or overpowering, which might be why. This was actually our second time having banana milkshakes from this place…we had gone in April to try their food but arrived just as they were closing. The store owner was really nice though and before we could say anything, gave us each a banana milkshake on the house, then closed up shop.
For those wondering what falafel is, its a fried ball of spiced chickpeas and/or fava beans. For some reason I thought the falafel sandwich has meat in it–it doesn’t. The falafel sandwich was yummy, though I’d have to rate it as a solid 3 out of 5. It fell apart after a few bites but what got me was the ingredients weren’t evenly distributed…most of the falafel was on one side and most of the lettuce was on the other…so for a while it felt like I was eating pita and lettuce and hot sauce, then falafel and pita and hot sauce. Hmm.
